Babies

Before you come to us
there are a few things you can do
to prepare your baby

Preparing your baby for the water

At Fulton Swim School we offer a nurturing approach to infant swimming, we place a strong emphasis on parent / child bonding in classes to ensure maximum progression from each participant.

The first few months of water exposure are in the bath at home. Children are not born with a fear, it is a learned emotion. Children pick up from their parent / caregiver so at this time we need to be confident, relaxed and with no distractions (turn off the phone, don't answer the door, have all equipment ready, clothes, towels, toys). Check water is at a suitable temperature should be at about 32 degrees C, you can test with elbow. Insure the temperature of the room is warm and draft free when you start bathing.

Never leave the child unattended or in the care of a sibling, children can drown quickly and silently.

Swimming with the very young, we don't advise swimming infants before 6 months of age or until they can hold their heads up which is generally after 4 months of age. 6 months is the ideal age to start lessons for your child, as by then they are alert, and their immune system is stronger.

Newborn Exercise: At home we can introduce water awareness from birth, through bath time, where massage, play and being in the water are introduced.

New born babies' movement is controlled by over 70 different reflexes and writhing movements the infant has limited head control, learns through sensory exploration and repetition. Bath time stimulates most of these reflexes, and can be a special time for parents. Bathing with your child can be a bonding time for you and baby, babies respond to skin on skin contact.

It is much easier to hold baby on your legs where you can use two hands to wash and play.

Infants are adapted to swimming, when submerged they automatically hold their breath and make swimming movements however these skills start to fade at between 3 and 6 months we can stimulate this reflex by running water over the forehead eyes and face and by using cue words repetitively "Fulton are you ready 1, 2, 3" squeeze sponge over the head, we can ready them for submerging on cue when they do go to formal lessons. (Progress to larger amounts of water for example cups, watering cans, when baby feels comfortable).

Age from 4 Months

Around four months of age an infant begins to gain control of their head, arms and legs and can move them voluntary.

When an object is placed in front of them they are able to focus on it and reach out for it. This is great for hand eye coordination. They kick and try to move, especially if they are chasing something. It is easier to move through water than on land.

Now they will be starting to roll over. First front to back, then back to front. The child may start watching their hands and feet.

Age from 5 Months

At five months old, baby is starting to become more social and enjoy outside contact. When you or others look at, and talk to, baby will smile, babble away and watch you're every move. They are starting to enjoy being the centre of attention and like being where the action is.

We can now start looking at booking lessons, ready to start at six months. Here at Fulton Swim School we offer warm, clean, friendly surrounds and well trained staff. We follow Swim New Zealand guide lines for infant swimming with our own program presented by passionate teachers and you join our family of little swimmers.

About Your Infant

Their first lessons with a parent or guardian is a time of discovery for your child

Our swimming lessons for babies are always with a parent or guardian present with the baby in the water. This bond is needed to reassure your baby and introduce them gently to the experience. Our staff are fully trained to offer parents support and guidance in these early stages with a programme designed to be fun and enjoyable for your baby. Over the first few lessons we will slowly start introducing new experiences for your baby to grow their confidence. Here we explain the first 13 months of their development.

First lesson - from 6 months

At six months old usually baby has control of their head movement. It is still large compared to the rest of the body. They have better control of their arms and legs. When lying on their back they can raise the leg and catch the foot. Rolling over is also becoming voluntary and they will roll from front to back and back to front when they want a change of position.

Babies enjoy social contact and like to be around the parents and others. If talked to by others and smiled at, they smile back and babble away in baby talk. Parents are still the main focus in a baby's world and enjoy contact with Mum and Dad best and may become upset when handed to the teacher. In the first set of lessons there is minimal contact with the teacher so baby gets comfortable with us.

The head, arms and legs proportion make the child top heavy, which makes floating on the front hard. They maybe able to float on the back but this is an unnatural position and they may want to roll to the prone. When on the back, have the ears right under the water or right out, as half in and half out is uncomfortable as it makes the ears vibrate.

Case Study: Quinn

At six months, Quinn has had this first lesson. He was a little unsettled as he hadn't had his sleep, he was tried, a little unsure with all these people in his bath, and of the teacher. He needed a lot of reassurance from Sarah.

Quinn enjoyed the class if he was kept moving and when chasing a ball around the pool he has very good head control and was catching the ball. He was happy to go on his back if it wasn't for too long. Feet on the bucket go out, bounce back and pick up toys.

From 9 Months

Between nine and ten months infants are starting to pull themselves up on furniture and walking around. Most are crawling at this stage and no longer are they content to stay in one place, but like to be where the action is or in the midst of what is going on.

For swimming the righting reflex is strong and they wont like being on their backs however we still need to practice this for water safety reasons. Infants enjoy being on their tummies and will mimic the crawling motion and will swim further.

They have become very good at reading parents thoughts and feelings these should be positive and encouraging as this will help build self confidence.

At ten months Quinn is crawling, pulling himself up on furniture. In the water he is swimming between instructor and Dad with a crawling motion. He is happy on his back when doing rotations and rolling over through the tunnel.

Aged 10 - 12 Months

At this time babies become self confident, this happens as baby is moving around and trying to master the environment without parents help. They will also be starting to leave the separation anxiety stage behind and establishing their own identities. The infant enjoys routine and predictable events as this makes them feel in control which leads to self confidence. It is also very important to provide new and different experiences with lots of fun and positive encouragement.

This is also a time that fear can start happening. The easiest way to instil fear is to push an experience that they are not ready for. Parents and caregivers always need to be happy and positive.

The child’s language skills have improved, they can now understand more words and they are speaking. They enjoy imitating others so are more likely to copy parents and other children in the class.

From 13 Months

Unlimited energy. In most cases the child has mastered crawling, walking, and climbing - the infants gross motor skill develop very quickly at this age. Gross motor skill are what an infant uses to walk, crawl, and climb. To be able to develop gross motor skills the child needs to have postural control (control of head), strength and balance.

The infant will test the physical limitations of their muscles and abilities. They love to explore and are very social and friendly although they can still go through another anxiety stage - this usually doesn’t last long. The toddler will now start to copy what others do - if you demonstrate something they will imitate you as long as it is simple.

Between 13 and 16 months they are inconsistent in their need for you - one moment they will want to be close the next they will want to be away.

Until the age of about 3 years we require the parent to be in the water with their child, this bonding with the parent give the child the greatest start to their life as a young swimmer. The aim for pre school children is to provide an aquatic environment where children feel safe and are achieving to their potential while learning key water safety skills that are vital for survival in an aquatic environment. Our goal is for children to gain confidence, submerge, float, water safety skills and aspects of freestyle and backstroke are introduced.

About Your Child

School Age swimming lessons can vary significantly depending on the amount of water education the child has attended. We cater for those children that are frightened of the water to those who are competent swimmers looking for some technical advice. A focus is placed on breathing as this is the hardest skill to master in freestyle. In a school age lesson backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly will be taught. We also place great emphasis on stroke efficiency and correct technique.
